Wilmington Trash Pickup Schedule

The Wilmington trash pickup schedule is organized around a piece of infrastructure rather than a map grid. Interstate 95 splits the city in two, and which side you live on determines your collection days.

It is also one of the relatively few cities on this site with twice-weekly trash collection, which makes the schedule generous once you know your side.

Interstate 95 splits the city

Wilmington runs two residential routes, labeled by their relationship to the interstate. Everything about your schedule follows from which one you are on.

RouteWhereTrash days
Route AEast of I-95Mondays & Thursdays
Route BWest of I-95Tuesdays & Fridays

The split is unusually easy to self-diagnose. Most residents know immediately which side of I-95 they live on, which is more than can be said for a zone letter or a color-coded map.

It also persists through holiday weeks. Where most cities shift everyone by a day, Wilmington's holiday notices keep the east and west distinction and give each side its own revised dates.

How often is trash picked up in Wilmington?

Trash runs twice a week and recycling shares those same route days.

TrashTwice weeklyYour route's two days
RecyclingOn route daysSame route days

Twice-weekly collection is a real advantage in a dense older city with limited storage. Row houses with no alley and no yard do not have to hold a week of waste indoors.

Find your exact pickup day

Start from the interstate. If you are unsure which side your block falls on, the city's 311 service can confirm your route.

311 is the single front door for Wilmington sanitation. It handles route questions, missed pickups and special pickup scheduling alike, by phone on 3-1-1 or at WilmingtonDE.gov/311.

The 4 a.m. set-out window

Wilmington's set-out rule is stricter than most, and the morning end of it is genuinely early. Cans may go out from 6:00 p.m. the day before collection until 4:00 a.m. on pickup day.

That 4:00 a.m. cutoff is not a typo. Crews start early enough that a can rolled out at 6 a.m. may already have been passed.

  • Out no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before
  • Out no later than 4:00 a.m. on collection day
  • Back in by 6:00 p.m. after collection
  • Keep cans clear of parked cars and hydrants
  • Do not mix yard waste into household trash

In practice this means setting out the night before is the only reliable approach for most households. The window technically allows an early morning set-out, but it closes before most people are awake.

Wilmington Trash Holiday Schedule

Wilmington publishes a modified schedule notice ahead of each affected holiday rather than a single annual rule. Those notices preserve the route structure, listing separate revised days east and west of I-95.

A recent Thanksgiving notice shows the shape of it: separate trash days for each side of the interstate, recycling moved to the following Wednesday and Saturday, and no pickup at all on the two days the city was closed.

Because each notice is issued separately and gives different dates for each side of I-95, there is no shortcut here. Read the notice for your route rather than assuming the usual one-day shift.

Special pickups over 50 pounds

Wilmington draws its bulky line by weight and size rather than by item type. Anything over 50 pounds or too big for a can needs a special pickup rather than going out on a normal day.

Those are scheduled through 311, the same channel used for missed collections and route questions.

The fifty pound threshold is lower than it sounds once furniture is involved. A full mattress, a loaded bookcase or a small appliance will all clear it, so book rather than hope.

Yard waste rides with recycling

Yard waste in Wilmington is tied to recycling days rather than to trash days, and the city is explicit that it should not be mixed in with household trash.

That pairing is worth internalizing because it inverts the habit of cities where yard debris simply goes in the trash cart. Here, putting clippings in the trash can means they are in the wrong stream on the wrong day.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

The twice-weekly route structure described here serves residential addresses on city collection. Apartment buildings are generally served by shared containers arranged through the property.

Renters in those buildings have no route letter of their own. Ask your property manager which days the building is served and whether recycling is separated.
