Dover Trash Pickup Schedule

The Dover trash pickup schedule runs on a neat alternating rhythm. Trash goes weekly, and the other two services take turns: recycling one week, bulk items the next.

Once you know which week you are in, the whole schedule falls into place. The city publishes an annual recycling calendar precisely so residents can work that out.

How the alternating weeks work

Trash is the constant. Recycling and bulk collection alternate around it, which means there is no week without some additional service.

RecyclingEvery other week, same day as trashCity recycling container
Bulk itemsThe week recycling is not collectedSet at the curb
Yard wasteRegular weekly scheduleYour own container, 35 gal or less

That bulk arrangement is unusually generous. Rather than a few bookable pickups a year, Dover residents get a bulk opportunity every other week as a standing part of the service.

Everything goes in the black can

Dover is strict about containment, and this is the rule most likely to leave waste at your curb. Household trash must be bagged and placed in the city-provided black container.

The consequence is stated plainly: bags sitting outside the can are not collected. A bag propped against the container on a full week simply stays there.

If your household routinely exceeds one container, that is a conversation with Public Works rather than something to solve by setting extra bags out. The same department handles container requests.

Find your exact pickup day

Collection days and recycling weeks are both set out in the city's annual recycling calendar, which also lists holiday dates.

The three foot rule

Dover asks for a specific gap between containers, which matters because an automated arm needs clearance to grab one without catching the other.

  • Recycling container out by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled day
  • Keep it three feet from the trash container
  • All household trash bagged and inside the black can
  • Keep containers clear of parked cars and mailboxes
  • Do not overfill - the lid should close

Guidance on how early containers may go out the evening before has varied across city documents, with 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. both appearing. The 7:00 a.m. morning deadline is the consistent one, so work to that.

Dover Trash Holiday Schedule

Dover publishes its holiday collection dates inside the annual recycling calendar rather than as a standing rule. That calendar is the authority for any given year.

Because recycling and bulk alternate, a holiday shift can move which service you get as well as which day you get it. That is the detail worth checking rather than assuming.

Bulk items on the off week

Dover's bulk arrangement is the mirror image of its recycling schedule. Bulk household items such as furniture and appliances are collected the week recycling is not picked up.

Piles are capped at roughly four feet by four feet by eight feet, which is a genuinely useful volume, comfortably more than a sofa and a mattress together.

Four categories are excluded outright: tires, concrete, bricks and hazardous waste. Those need their own disposal route regardless of which week it is.

Yard waste rules

Yard waste has the most specific container rule in Dover's system, and it runs counter to habit in most cities. The waste must be loose in a privately owned container of 35 gallons or less, and no bags are allowed.

That is your own can rather than a city-issued one, and the 35 gallon ceiling keeps it liftable by hand. Routine yard waste then goes out on the regular weekly schedule.

Larger quantities follow a different path. Bulk yard waste goes out on recycling day rather than with the weekly container, so a big garden clearance needs timing against the calendar.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

The black can service and alternating bulk weeks described here apply to residential customers on city collection. Apartment complexes are generally served by shared containers arranged through the property.

Note also that Kent County Public Works handles service for unincorporated areas outside the city, on a separate schedule and with its own yard waste program.
