Newark Trash Pickup Schedule

The Newark trash pickup schedule is one of the tidiest on this site. The city maps the whole working week: trash early, yard waste mid-week, recycling late, with no alternating calendar to track.

There is also a rule here with real teeth. Leaving your cart out past the deadline can cost $100.

Which Newark is this?

Two American cities share this name and they could hardly be less alike. Getting them mixed up means following a completely different schedule.

If your address is in New Jersey, see our Newark, NJ guide instead. The two cities are not even pronounced the same way locally.

A week mapped out

Newark splits the week cleanly between its three streams, and each household lands on one half of each pairing.

StreamDayContainer
TrashMonday or Tuesday, by addressCity cart
Yard wasteWednesday - Green WednesdaysCity-provided green cart
RecyclingThursday or Friday, single streamCity cart

Every stream is weekly. There is no every-other-week recycling to remember, which removes the single most common source of confusion in other cities.

The gap between trash day and recycling day is deliberate. With trash at the start of the week and recycling at the end, carts are never out together, and the city can enforce its tidy-up rule more easily.

Green Wednesdays

Yard waste has its own branded day and its own season. Each year, starting the first Wednesday in March through the first Wednesday in December, the City of Newark collects yard waste on Green Wednesdays.

Collection uses a city-provided green cart, so this is a proper third stream rather than a bagged add-on.

One exception is firm and easy to miss: yard waste will not be collected during holiday weeks. A Green Wednesday that falls in a holiday week is skipped outright rather than moved, so plan garden work around it.

Find your exact pickup day

Because both trash and recycling split across two possible days, you need the lookup rather than a guess.

Public Works and Water Resources is on (302) 366-7000 and handles both the schedule and off-season yard waste requests.

The $100 cart rule

Newark enforces a tidy streetscape more firmly than most cities on this site, and the penalty is specific rather than vague.

  • Carts out by 7 a.m. on your pickup day
  • Carts moved out of street view by 6 p.m. the same day
  • Carts left out in the front yard or driveway can draw a $100 fine
  • Keep carts clear of parked cars and mailboxes
  • Keep lids closed and do not overfill

Note the exact wording of the requirement: out of street view, not merely off the street. Rolling a cart from the curb to the driveway does not satisfy it, which is the detail that catches residents out.

In a town where a large share of housing is student rentals, this rule generates a steady stream of notices. If you are renting, it is worth establishing early who in the house is responsible for bringing carts in.

Newark Trash Holiday Schedule

Newark's holiday handling has one consequence that is more concrete than most: yard waste is not collected during holiday weeks. Trash and recycling schedules for holiday weeks are published by the city.

That makes the Green Wednesday season effectively shorter than its March to December dates suggest, since any holiday week removes one collection.

Yard waste in winter

The Green Wednesday season ends with the first Wednesday in December and does not resume until March. That leaves a three-month gap, and Newark fills it with a request-based service.

During the winter months, residents may schedule a yard waste collection by calling Public Works and Water Resources on 302-366-7000.

This is genuinely useful after a winter storm brings down branches. Rather than holding debris until March, a phone call gets it collected.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

The three-cart weekly structure described here serves residential addresses on city collection. Apartment complexes are generally served by shared containers arranged through the property.

Student housing is a large part of Newark's rental stock, and arrangements vary between individual carts at a rented house and shared dumpsters at a complex. The $100 cart rule applies to the former.
