The Cheyenne trash pickup schedule changed meaningfully in recent years, and a guide written before February 2025 will describe a system the city no longer uses.

Collection now runs Monday to Thursday, and holidays are handled by a sliding schedule rather than Saturday catch-up runs.

A four-day collection week

From February 1, 2025, the city moved regularly scheduled trash, recycling and yard waste collection to a Monday to Thursday schedule.

StreamCollection weekSet-out
TrashMonday to ThursdayBy 6 a.m.
RecyclingMonday to ThursdayBy 6 a.m.
Yard wasteMonday to ThursdayBy 6 a.m.

Keeping Friday clear is not an accident. It is the spare day that makes the holiday rule work without anyone collecting on a Saturday.

Containers out by 6 a.m.

Containers need to be out by 6 a.m. on your collection day, across all three streams.

On the high plains that usually means setting out the night before, with the caveat that Cheyenne wind can relocate a loose lid across a street overnight.

Cheyenne Trash Holiday Schedule

The city publishes a holiday chart each year showing how the week shifts. The principle is consistent: everyone moves one day later.

Cheyenne also observes Cheyenne Day during Frontier Days in late July, a local holiday that has had its own announced collection schedule. Confirm the current year's chart, since the city publishes a fresh one annually.

How the sliding schedule works

The city describes the arrangement in its own words as a sliding schedule. Instead of collecting on Saturdays for customers whose day falls on a holiday, all customers shift one day later during the holiday week.

That is why Friday matters. A Thursday route in a holiday week is collected on Friday, which is otherwise a non-collection day, and nobody works a Saturday.

Before the change, holiday pickups usually moved to Saturday. A Christmas Day falling on a Friday, for instance, used to be collected the following Saturday.

Facilities close on holidays

Curbside collection slides, but the places you might drive to do not. Transfer stations, the landfill and the compost facility typically close on holidays.

Office hours and reopening dates vary by facility, so a holiday weekend is the wrong time to assume the landfill gate will be open.
