Providence Trash Pickup Schedule

The Providence trash pickup schedule is run by the city's Department of Public Works, and its holiday rule is one of the clearest published anywhere: if a holiday lands on your day, your trash is picked up the very next day.

There is one wrinkle that catches out anyone who has moved here from another state, and it falls in August.

How often collection runs

Collection is weekly on a day tied to your address. Trash and recycling are both city services rather than a subscription you arrange yourself.

Recycling is required

Providence does not treat recycling as optional. The city states plainly that recycling is required in the City of Providence.

That phrasing matters in a dense city with a lot of rental housing, where it is easy to assume the blue cart is a courtesy. It is not.

Find your exact pickup day

Your day is assigned by address. PVD 311 is the quickest route to confirming it, reporting a miss or asking about a container.

Providence Trash Holiday Schedule

The rule is simple and applies across the whole week. A holiday pushes your collection to the next day, and every remaining day that week shifts one later.

The city's own worked example is an Independence Day week: there is no pickup on the Monday, and trash is collected across the following days instead.

Holiday2026 dateAffects pickup?
New Year's DayThursday, Jan 1Thu to Fri, Fri to Sat
MLK DayMonday, Jan 19Whole week shifts one day

Providence observes eleven holidays for collection, which is more than most cities on this site. The city's page does not state what happens when a holiday falls on a Saturday, so confirm through PVD 311 in those years.

The holiday nobody expects

Victory Day falls on the second Monday in August and is a state holiday observed only in Rhode Island. In 2026 it lands on Monday, August 10.

It is a genuine collection change, not a ceremonial observance. Because it is a Monday, the whole week shifts, which means a Friday household is collected on the Saturday.

If you have moved to Providence from another state, this is the single most likely week to leave a cart at the curb unemptied, because nothing in a national holiday calendar flags it.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

Providence has a large share of triple-deckers and converted houses, where collection often serves several units from one set of containers.

If you rent, ask the property which day the building is collected and where its recycling carts live, since the requirement to recycle applies regardless of who puts the cart out.
