Springfield Trash Pickup Schedule

This Springfield trash pickup schedule covers a genuinely unusual setup among Illinois cities: there is no city-run garbage department here at all. Every property must contract directly with one of two licensed private haulers, Lake Area Disposal or Republic Services, while the city itself only sets a rate cap and funds a separate yard waste and bulky-item program.

Here's how that two-hauler system actually works, what the rate cap currently allows haulers to charge, and how the city's own programs fill in the gaps that a private-only system leaves open.

How often is trash picked up in Springfield?

Garbage is collected weekly, but your exact collection day depends entirely on which private hauler services your address. Since there is no single city contract, Springfield doesn't publish one unified collection calendar the way most cities in this guide do.

Waste Management exited Springfield's residential market in February 2024, citing inefficient alley routes for its automated trucks, leaving Lake Area Disposal and Republic Services as the two remaining licensed haulers.

Find your exact pickup day

Since collection is split across two independent companies, there's no single address-lookup tool. Call your hauler directly to confirm your day:

Lake Area Disposal: 217-522-9317 →

Or Republic Services at 217-522-7797. If you're not sure which hauler services your address, either company can typically tell you over the phone.

Bin placement rules

  • Confirm your container size and placement rules with your specific hauler
  • Yard waste curbside by 6 a.m. Monday of your assigned pickup week
  • Stay current on the CWLP waste fee to remain eligible for city programs

Springfield Trash Holiday Schedule

Because two separate private haulers run their own routes, there is no single official city holiday table the way Chicago or Rockford publishes one. Each hauler sets its own holiday policy independently.

How much does trash service cost in Springfield?

Springfield's cost structure has two separate parts. Your private hauler bill is rate-capped by city ordinance, currently at $15 a month for one container (32 to 64 gallons) and $18 a month for two containers (65 to 94 gallons), typically billed quarterly.

On top of that, every household pays a separate $4.50 monthly Waste and Recycling Fee on the CWLP utility bill, which funds the city's yard waste and bulky-item programs. As of early 2026, at least one hauler was publicly petitioning the city to revisit this decade-old rate cap, so treat the exact dollar figures as current but subject to change rather than permanently fixed.

Bulky item pickup

Bulky items are free, up to 6 per calendar year, but this program is run by Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County rather than the city or your private hauler. You can split your allowance into two 3-item pickups or use it all in one 6-item pickup.

Schedule by phone at 217-523-2710 or online, and set items curbside no earlier than 24 hours before your pickup. You must be current on the $4.50 CWLP waste fee to qualify, and construction debris, hazardous materials, and electronics are excluded.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

City ordinance draws a specific line here: the hauler rate cap applies to single-family homes and multifamily buildings of 3 units or fewer. Landlords are legally responsible for making sure service exists and can be fined for lapses, though they may let tenants arrange their own hauler.

For buildings of 3 or more units, haulers are required to offer recycling service if the building owner requests it, but it isn't automatically bundled the way it likely is for smaller properties.

Reporting illegal dumping

Springfield uses SeeClickFix for resident reports of illegal dumping and other public-works issues, which routes directly to the city's Public Works department with a tracking number. For a specific missed pickup, contact your hauler first, then Public Works at 217-789-2255 if it isn't resolved.
