Chicago Trash Pickup Schedule
On this page
This Chicago trash pickup schedule covers a city where garbage is collected by City crews, not a private contractor, but only for a specific slice of housing stock: buildings of 4 units or fewer. Everything larger falls under a completely different, privately-contracted system, which trips up a lot of Chicago renters who assume the whole city runs the same way.
Here's how the city's garbage collection schedule actually works by zone, what the flat monthly Garbage Fee costs, and how the Blue Cart recycling program replaced Chicago's infamous Blue Bag era.
How often is trash picked up in Chicago?
Garbage is collected weekly, Monday through Friday, for eligible 1-4 unit buildings. Blue Cart recycling runs every other week, on the same weekday as your garbage day, alternating by zone.
| Stream | Frequency | Container |
|---|---|---|
| Garbage | Weekly | Black cart or bin |
| Recycling | Every other week | Blue Cart, single-stream |
This City-run service applies only to buildings of 4 units or fewer. Larger buildings use private haulers, covered below.
Find your exact pickup day
Your collection day depends on your specific zone, not your ward. Confirm yours with the city's recycling tool:

Bin placement rules
- Carts out by 7 a.m. on your collection day
- Recycling loose in the Blue Cart, no bagging
- Bulky items set beside your regular cart, not blocking the sidewalk
Chicago Trash Holiday Schedule
When a collection day falls on an observed holiday, that route does not run. Instead, that day's pickup and every remaining route that week shift forward one day.
| Holiday | 2026 date | Affects pickup? |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thu, Jan 1 | Yes - week shifts forward one day |
| Memorial Day | Mon, May 25 | Yes - week shifts forward one day |
| Independence Day | Sat, Jul 4 | No change (falls on a non-collection day) |
| Labor Day | Mon, Sep 7 | Yes - week shifts forward one day |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thu, Nov 26 | Yes - week shifts forward one day |
| Christmas Day | Fri, Dec 25 | Yes - week shifts forward one day |
Confirm exact current-year dates on chicago.gov before relying on this table for a specific week, since not every minor holiday is confirmed to shift service.

How much does trash service cost in Chicago?
Eligible households pay a flat Garbage Fee of $9.50 per dwelling unit per month, billed on the same City utility statement as water and sewer. The rate has stayed at $9.50 since it was introduced in 2016, with no cart-size tiers since City crews use standard-issue bins for everyone.
This fee only applies to buildings of 4 units or fewer that receive City-provided pickup. Larger buildings pay their private hauler directly, at rates the city doesn't set.
Bulky item pickup
Bulky items are free for buildings of 4 units or fewer. Set items next to your cart on your regular collection day by 7 a.m., or call 311 for appliances and larger piles. Refrigerators and freezers need their doors or lids removed before pickup.
Dumping bulky items without arranging pickup risks a sanitation-code fine between $150 and $500, so it's worth calling ahead rather than guessing.
Apartments & multifamily buildings
This is the single most important structural fact about Chicago's system: City-run garbage and recycling service covers only buildings of 4 units or fewer. Since a January 1, 2017 ordinance, buildings of 5 or more units must contract their own private hauler for both garbage and source-separated recycling, plus provide bins and signage for tenants.
Non-compliant landlords can face fines from $500 to $5,000 per day. As of October 2024, residents can also file 311 complaints specifically against private haulers that violate the recycling ordinance.
Reporting illegal dumping
Report illegal dumping or a missed pickup through Chicago 311 - call 311 (or 312-744-5000 from outside the city), or use the Chi311 app or website at 311.chicago.gov, selecting "Garbage & Recycling" or "Sanitation Code Complaint."
