Broken Arrow Trash Pickup Schedule

Two things make the Broken Arrow trash pickup schedule easier to live with than most. Recycling is collected every week, not every other week, on the same day as your trash. And collection runs on nearly every city holiday - only three days a year stop the trucks. Here's how the four-day route week works and the unusually specific cart placement rules the automated trucks require.

How often is trash picked up in Broken Arrow?

The City of Broken Arrow provides curbside collection of both trash and recycling once a week. Every customer gets two city carts, and both go out on the same service day.

Weekly recycling is worth calling out. Across the cities covered on this site, every-other-week recycling is far more common - including in neighbouring Tulsa's wider region and in Oklahoma City, where the Big Green cart alternates. Here both carts go out together, every week, which means no recycling-week calendar to track.

The four-day route week

Residential routes run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only. There are no Friday collection days, and your assigned day is based on where your home is in the city.

That compressed week is also why holiday handling is so straightforward here - with Friday unused, the city has slack to absorb disruption without pushing everyone back a day.

Cart placement rules

Broken Arrow's placement requirements are more precise than most cities on this site, because the automated collection arm needs room to reach and lift each cart cleanly.

  • Carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on your service day
  • Wheels facing your home, lid opening toward the street
  • At least 8 feet of clearance from mailboxes, parked vehicles and other obstacles
  • At least 3 feet between the trash and recycling carts
  • Keep lids closed

The 8-foot rule is the one most often missed, and it's the most common reason a cart gets skipped on a street where everything otherwise looks fine. A car parked a little too close on collection morning is enough.

Broken Arrow Trash Holiday Schedule

Broken Arrow runs collection on every city-observed holiday except three. Trash and recycling are suspended only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Holiday2026 dateAffects pickup?
New Year's DayThursday, Jan 1Yes - service suspended
MLK DayMonday, Jan 19No - regular collection
Presidents DayMonday, Feb 16No - regular collection
Memorial DayMonday, May 25No - regular collection
JuneteenthFriday, Jun 19No - no Friday routes anyway
Independence DaySaturday, Jul 4No - regular collection
Labor DayMonday, Sep 7No - regular collection
Veterans DayWednesday, Nov 11No - regular collection
Thanksgiving DayThursday, Nov 26Yes - service suspended
Christmas DayFriday, Dec 25Yes - service suspended

This reflects a deliberate policy change: Labor Day was the first holiday on which sanitation crews kept to their regular collection schedule, meaning residents saw no delayed pickup that week. If you remember Broken Arrow shifting collection around holidays in the past, that's why the current schedule looks different.

What goes in each cart

Black cart - trash

Weekly

Goes in

  • Bagged household waste
  • Food-soiled paper & napkins
  • Plastic bags & film wrap
  • Pet waste, diapers

Keep out

  • Batteries & electronics
  • Paint, chemicals, motor oil

Blue cart - recycling

Weekly, same day

Goes in

  • Cardboard, flattened
  • Paper, mail, magazines
  • Metal cans, empty & rinsed
  • Plastic bottles & jugs

Keep out

  • Plastic bags - they jam sorters
  • Styrofoam, food waste

Because both carts are collected together every week, the 3-foot separation rule matters - carts pushed up against each other can't both be serviced by the automated arm in a single pass.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

The black and blue cart service described here covers residential customers on city collection. Apartment complexes in Broken Arrow are typically served by shared containers arranged through the property, so collection frequency and billing sit with the building rather than an individual account. Renters should check with their property manager rather than the city service schedule.

Reporting a missed pickup

Missed collections, cart problems and new service requests all go through Broken Arrow customer service on 918-259-8409.

Before reporting a skip, check the placement rules above - insufficient clearance or a cart turned the wrong way are far more common causes than a genuinely missed route, and both are fixable before next week.
