Reno Trash Pickup Schedule
On this page
The Reno trash pickup schedule comes with a genuinely rare perk: holidays don't delay it at all. Where almost every other city on this site pushes collection back a day around New Year's or Thanksgiving, Waste Management runs Reno's curbside routes straight through the calendar. Northern Nevada is also served by a different hauler than the Las Vegas valley, so the zones, rates and extras here work nothing like they do down south.
How often is trash picked up in Reno?
Waste Management collects across six zones, and unusually the week runs Monday through Saturday rather than stopping on Friday. Trash is weekly; recycling alternates on an even-week or odd-week rotation tied to your address.
| Stream | Frequency | Container |
|---|---|---|
| Trash | Weekly, Mon-Sat by zone | WM cart (35-96 gal) |
| Recycling | Every other week, same day | WM recycling cart |
Because routes run six days a week across six zones, a Saturday collection day is completely normal in Reno rather than a holiday make-up run - don't assume a Saturday pickup means something has shifted.
Find your day & recycling week
Two things come from your address: which of the six zones you fall in, and whether your recycling lands on even or odd weeks. Both are on the WM lookup:

Waste Management's Reno office can also confirm your schedule or arrange carts on 775-329-8822. If you live outside city limits in unincorporated Washoe County, your service details may differ - check with the county rather than the city.
Cart placement rules
- Set carts out the night before or early on collection morning
- Leave clearance around each cart for the automated arm
- Keep lids closed - Washoe Valley wind is no joke
- In winter, keep carts clear of plowed snow banks so the truck can reach them
- Bring carts back in once emptied
Reno Trash Holiday Schedule
This is the shortest holiday section on the site, because the answer is the same every time: Waste Management collects on all holidays in Reno, with no delays at any point in the year.
| Holiday | 2026 date | Affects pickup? |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday, Jan 1 | No - collection runs as normal |
| MLK Day | Monday, Jan 19 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Presidents Day | Monday, Feb 16 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 25 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Juneteenth | Friday, Jun 19 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Independence Day | Saturday, Jul 4 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Labor Day | Monday, Sep 7 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Nevada Day | Friday, Oct 30 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Veterans Day | Wednesday, Nov 11 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, Nov 26 | No - collection runs as normal |
| Christmas Day | Friday, Dec 25 | No - collection runs as normal |
One important exception: while curbside collection runs, transfer stations and landfills do close on major holidays. If you were planning to use one of your free disposal trips on a holiday weekend, check the facility's hours first - that's where holiday closures actually bite in Reno.
What goes in each cart
Trash
WeeklyGoes in
- Bagged household waste
- Food-soiled paper & napkins
- Plastic bags & film wrap
- Pet waste, diapers
Keep out
- Batteries & electronics
- Paint, chemicals, motor oil
Recycling
Every other weekGoes in
- Cardboard, flattened
- Paper, mail, magazines
- Metal cans, empty & rinsed
- Plastic bottles & jugs
Keep out
- Plastic bags - they jam sorters
- Styrofoam, food waste
Overflow
20 stickers/yearGoes in
- Extra bags that won't fit the cart
- Set beside the cart on your day
- One sticker per excess item
Keep out
- Bulky furniture (use a transfer station trip)
- Construction debris
The excess waste stickers are worth knowing about before you need them - 20 a year is generous, and they let you clear a one-off overflow without booking anything or making a trip.
How much does trash service cost in Reno?
Rates depend on cart size, so a household that downsizes its trash cart pays less. The standard pairing is a 96-gallon trash cart with a 96-gallon recycling cart at $25.20 a month, under rates effective April 1, 2025.
| Service level | Monthly rate |
|---|---|
| 96-gal trash + 96-gal recycling (standard) | $25.20 |
| Smaller cart sizes (e.g. 35-gal) | Lower - rate varies by size |
| Senior & low-income options | Reduced rates available |
Reno is the most expensive of the Nevada cities covered here, but the rate includes extras the southern Nevada franchises don't - the free transfer station trips and the overflow stickers below are both bundled in, not add-ons.
Bulky items & free disposal trips
Reno handles large items differently from the Las Vegas valley: instead of a curbside bulk truck on a rotation, residents get free disposal trips they can use whenever they need them.
| Option | What you get |
|---|---|
| WM transfer station trips | 4 free trips a year - Commercial Row or Stead |
| Per trip allowance | One standard pickup truck load, about 3 cubic yards |
| Lockwood Landfill | One bulky item (mattress, sofa) per household free, Mon-Sat |
| Excess waste stickers | 20 per year, for overflow on your regular day |
This suits a big clear-out better than a scheduled bulk system does - you go when you're ready rather than waiting for your bulk week. The trade-off is that you need a vehicle and have to haul it yourself.
Apartments & multifamily buildings
The zone schedule and residential rates above cover single-family homes with individual carts. Apartment complexes in Reno typically use shared bins or compactors on a commercial account arranged by the property, so collection frequency is set by the building rather than a residential zone. Check with your property manager, and note that the free transfer station trips are tied to residential WM accounts.
Reporting illegal dumping
Nevada Revised Statute 444.630 makes it illegal to dump solid waste - including junk vehicles, construction debris and yard waste - anywhere other than a designated facility. Report dumping to the City of Reno if the site is inside city limits, or to Washoe County if it falls outside them.
Given how much open land surrounds the Truckee Meadows, knowing which jurisdiction a site sits in saves a lot of time - a dump site on the edge of town is often county rather than city.
