Omaha Trash Pickup Schedule

The Omaha trash pickup schedule is operated by FCC Environmental Services under contract to the city's Public Works Department, so the trucks are a contractor's while the schedule and the help line are the city's.

Two things are worth fixing in your head before anything else: the 6 a.m. deadline, and the fact that a holiday week here ends on a Saturday.

How often collection runs

Residential collection is weekly on a day tied to your address. Garbage, recycling and yard waste are all part of the same contracted service.

The city's notices consistently refer to garbage, yard waste and recyclable materials together, which means a holiday affects all three rather than just the trash cart.

The 6 a.m. rule

Omaha asks residents to have carts and yard waste bags out by 6 a.m. on the collection day. That is early enough that setting out the night before is the practical habit for most households.

It matters more during a holiday week. When the whole schedule slides, a route can arrive at a time you are not expecting, and a cart still in the garage at 6 a.m. is a cart missed.

Find your exact pickup day

Your collection day comes from the city's Public Works service, and the Solid Waste help line can confirm it for your address.

Omaha Trash Holiday Schedule

Omaha uses the broad version of the holiday rule. There is no collection on the holiday itself, and the rest of that week shifts one day later.

A Thursday holiday is the clearest case: Thursday routes are collected Friday, and Friday routes are collected Saturday, while Monday to Wednesday run normally.

City notices have named Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day as the holidays that move the schedule. Confirm the current year before a holiday week.

Why Saturdays appear

Many cities absorb a holiday by skipping it and resuming the following Monday. Omaha does not. Because every day after the holiday slides, the week gains a Saturday route.

If your normal day is Friday, you are the household most affected: in six weeks of the year your collection lands on a Saturday rather than a Friday.

Get the alerts

The city runs an email alert list for holiday and weather delays, which is the single most useful thing a new resident can sign up for.

Registration is at join.wasteline.org. Given that Omaha weather disrupts collection as often as holidays do, it saves guessing.
