Bangor Trash Pickup Schedule

The Bangor trash pickup schedule is built on a single city-issued bin and a very early deadline. Residents use a 96-gallon bin and must have it out by 6:30 a.m.

What makes Bangor genuinely different is everything that does not go to the curb. Bulky waste, brush, cardboard and tires each have their own destination.

How often is trash picked up in Bangor?

Curbside collection uses a 96-gallon city-issued bin on a scheduled day assigned to your address.

That table is the real shape of waste disposal in Bangor. The curbside bin handles everyday household waste, and four other streams each have a separate route.

The 6:30 a.m. deadline

Bangor asks for bins out by 6:30 a.m., which is among the earliest deadlines of any city covered on this site and earlier than most people's alarm.

In practice that makes setting out the night before the only dependable approach for most households, particularly in winter when clearing a path to the curb takes time.

There is a second reason to set out early in Bangor. Collection times shift with route volume and weather, so a bin out at 6:25 may still be collected well before you would otherwise be awake.

Find your exact pickup day

The city publishes an online find-your-collection-day lookup covering every address.

Schedule changes are announced on the city's Facebook and Twitter pages, and residents can sign up for email notifications. In a northern city where storms move collection, that sign-up is worth doing.

No curbside bulky collection

This is the single most important thing to know before clearing out a room. Bulky waste and demolition debris are not collected at the curb in Bangor.

Both go to the Pinetree Transfer Station, which accepts Bangor residential bulky waste and demolition debris. You pay a tipping fee based on weight at the scales.

Pinetree Transfer StationHours
Monday to Friday7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
SundayClosed

One rule to note before you set off: loads must be covered. An uncovered trailer or pickup bed is a problem at the gate, not just on the road.

The free brush permit

Bangor's brush arrangement is unusually generous and under-used. Brush and branches go to Public Works at 530 Maine Avenue, open 7:00 a.m. to sunset, seven days a week.

A permit is required, but it costs nothing. Permits are free to Bangor residents, property owners and businesses.

Seven days a week until sunset is a remarkably wide window for a municipal facility, and it means a Sunday afternoon of pruning can be disposed of the same day rather than held for a weekday.

The same Public Works site takes clean cardboard on the same schedule, which is useful after a move or a large delivery when a single week's bin will not cope.

Bangor Trash Holiday Schedule

Bangor announces schedule changes rather than publishing one standing rule, and it does so through social media and email rather than a fixed annual table.

Maine also observes Patriots' Day in April, a state holiday that residents arriving from other states frequently do not expect.

Because Bangor communicates changes through its social channels and email list rather than a published calendar, signing up for notifications is the practical equivalent of having a holiday schedule.

Spring cleanup

Bangor runs an annual spring cleanup with roadside pickup for specific categories, historically branches and scrap metal, on dates announced each year.

It is not a general bulky amnesty. Items such as appliances containing freon and hazardous liquids cannot be picked up through the program, so those still need the transfer station or a specialist.

Dates move year to year, so check the city's current notice rather than working from last year's. This is the one time branches leave Bangor by the roadside rather than by permit.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

The city-issued bin service described here covers residential addresses on city collection. Apartment buildings are commonly served by shared containers arranged through the property.

The brush permit is worth knowing about either way, since it is free to property owners as well as residents, which covers landlords maintaining rental properties.
