Hilo Trash Pickup Schedule
On this page
The Hilo trash pickup schedule is unlike anything else on this site, because for most residents there is no pickup at all. The County of Hawaii does not fund municipal curbside collection, so household waste is something you either drive to a transfer station or pay a private company to take.
That makes the transfer station, not a collection calendar, the thing to plan around. Its hours are generous and its closures are few, but the rules on what it accepts are specific.
There is no county curbside collection
This is the foundation of waste disposal on the Big Island and it surprises almost everyone arriving from the mainland or from Oahu. The County of Hawaii does not provide municipally funded curbside collection.
The county's role is running the disposal network rather than collecting from homes. It operates transfer stations and recycling drop-off sites across the island, and residents bring waste to them.
There is no county cart, no route day and no address lookup that will return a collection schedule. Calling the county to start trash service does not apply here.
Your two options
Every Hilo household resolves waste one of two ways, and plenty use a mix of both.
| Option | How it works | Who sets the rules |
|---|---|---|
| Self-haul | Drive waste to a county transfer station | County of Hawaii |
| Private hauler | Pay a company for pickup and recycling | Your hauler |
| Recycling drop-off | County sites, by commodity | County of Hawaii |
| HI-5 containers | Certified redemption centers | State deposit program |
If you go the private route, remember that every schedule detail comes from the company rather than the county. Frequency, rates, accepted materials and holiday closures are all theirs to set.
The Hilo transfer station
The main disposal point for the Hilo area is on Hoolaulima Road, and its hours are considerably more generous than a typical municipal facility.
| Facility | Address | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Hilo Transfer Station | 1471 Hoolaulima Road | Daily, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm |
Twelve hours a day, seven days a week, is a genuinely practical window. It means a disposal run can fit before work, after work or at the weekend without planning around narrow opening times.
The county operates a network of stations across the island, so Hilo's is not the only option if another sits closer to your route. The county's facilities page lists locations, hours and fees for each.
Load limits and what is accepted
Transfer stations are built for household quantities, not for clearing a property, and the county applies limits accordingly. Residential loads have been capped by both frequency and volume, with reported limits of one load per day and a maximum of around three cubic yards.
Construction and demolition debris is handled separately. It has been directed to the East Hawaii Regional Sort Station rather than the transfer station, under its own caps on load size, individual item size and weight, and with rocks, concrete and grading materials excluded.
Several of these limits were introduced in operational notices rather than permanent rules, so confirm the current caps with the Solid Waste Division on 808-961-8270 before a big load. Turning up with more than the station will take means a wasted trip.
Businesses cannot use transfer stations to dispose of rubbish. Commercial waste in East Hawaii is directed to the East Hawaii Sanitary Landfill instead.
Hilo Trash Holiday Schedule
Because there are no collection routes, the holiday question here is simply whether the station is open. The answer is almost always yes: all county recycling and transfer stations close on just three days a year.
Those three are New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Every other holiday, state or federal, the stations keep their normal daily hours.
| Holiday | 2026 date | Stations open? |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday, Jan 1 | No - closed |
| MLK Day | Monday, Jan 19 | Yes - normal hours |
| Presidents Day | Monday, Feb 16 | Yes - normal hours |
| Prince Kuhio Day | Thursday, Mar 26 | Yes - normal hours |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 25 | Yes - normal hours |
| Kamehameha Day | Thursday, Jun 11 | Yes - normal hours |
| Independence Day | Saturday, Jul 4 | Yes - normal hours |
| Statehood Day | Friday, Aug 21 | Yes - normal hours |
| Labor Day | Monday, Sep 7 | Yes - normal hours |
| Veterans Day | Wednesday, Nov 11 | Yes - normal hours |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, Nov 26 | No - closed |
| Christmas Day | Friday, Dec 25 | No - closed |
If you use a private hauler instead, this table does not govern your service. Your hauler publishes its own holiday calendar, which may differ entirely from the county's station closures.

Greenwaste rules
Greenwaste handling differs from station to station, which is unusual and worth checking before you load the truck. The rule turns on whether your station has a dedicated greenwaste area.
At stations that do have one, greenwaste cannot go in the municipal solid waste chute. At stations that do not, greenwaste may go in the chute, subject to limits on volume, size and type.
Hilo's rainfall makes this a bigger part of household waste than in drier places. Green material accumulates fast, so knowing which rule your station follows saves repeat trips.
Recycling and HI-5
Recycling on the Big Island is shaped by a hard economic constraint: everything collected has to be shipped off-island or used locally. The county has been explicit that recycling is costly here.
Its drop-off program therefore focuses on commodities that are in demand or reusable on-island rather than accepting the widest possible range of materials. That list can change, so check before assuming an item is taken.
HI-5 beverage containers are a separate system. They carry a refundable deposit and belong at a certified redemption center, not in a drop-off bin, because that is where you get the money back.
Apartments & multifamily buildings
Apartment and condominium buildings in Hilo generally contract a private hauler for shared containers, since the county provides no collection to default to. The arrangement sits entirely with the property.
If you rent, ask the property manager whether a hauler serves the building and whether recycling is included. Without that, the transfer station is your route.
