Torrington Trash Pickup Schedule

Suburban home in a residential neighborhood

This Torrington trash pickup schedule is run by the city's contracted hauler, USA Hauling and Recycling, with trash collected weekly and recycling on a biweekly A/B rotation. Your street determines your exact day, and the city publishes an official calendar to match. Here's how collection, seasonal yard waste, and free bulky pickups all work together.

How often is trash picked up in Torrington?

Torrington's garbage collection schedule runs weekly, performed by USA Hauling and Recycling under contract with the city. Recycling is single-stream and collected biweekly, on the same day as trash, following a designated "A Week" or "B Week" pattern.

Everything needs to be curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day. Yard waste is the exception - it's not a year-round service, running only during dedicated spring and fall windows.

GarbageWeekly64-gallon gray automated cart
RecyclingBiweekly (A/B week)96-gallon blue cart (single-stream)
Yard wasteSpring & fall onlyBiodegradable paper bags or bundles

The only confirmed separate charge is the $250-per-year fee for an additional container. Whether base curbside service is covered by property taxes or billed as its own line item isn't stated anywhere official - contact the Tax Collector at 860-489-2209 ext. 6 or the Solid Waste Department to confirm for your account.

Find your exact pickup day

Torrington publishes a street-by-street lookup showing both your trash day and your recycling A/B week as an official PDF calendar and route list. There's no interactive address tool - the printed schedule is the source of truth.

If your street isn't listed or you're not sure which A/B week applies, call the Solid Waste Department through Public Works at 860-489-2232.

Bin placement rules

The standard automated cart is a 64-gallon gray bin, roughly equivalent to three old-style standard barrels. Residents who don't fill it each week can request a smaller 48-gallon cart instead, at no extra cost.

For the spring and fall yard waste windows, residents are told not to call to schedule - collection happens automatically on your regular trash day throughout each program's dates.

  • Carts curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day
  • Yard waste in biodegradable paper bags (no tape) or bundles under 50 lbs
  • Branches 4 ft or shorter, 3 inches or less in diameter
  • Loose yard waste piles are not picked up - bag or bundle everything

Torrington Trash Holiday Schedule

Torrington skips collection on five holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. When one of these falls in a collection week, pickup runs one day behind schedule for the rest of that week.

Bulky waste disposal

Torrington gives every residence two free bulky-waste collections per calendar year, a policy in effect since January 1, 2025. A $75 fee applies to each additional pickup beyond those two, and it must be paid before the pickup gets scheduled.

Request a pickup through the online Bulk Waste Pick-up Request Form, and it'll only be collected on your regular scheduled trash day. Submit your request at least one day ahead - Monday through Thursday by 3:30 p.m., or Friday by noon.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

Condos and associations that receive city trash and recycling service get regular curbside pickup like any other residence. Bulk waste collection, however, isn't provided for buildings with more than 4 apartment units or for commercial businesses, which points to larger complexes relying on private haulers instead.

Reporting illegal dumping

Torrington runs an anonymous tip line specifically for abuse of the bulk waste program, such as out-of-town items being dumped locally: 860-626-2070. No separate general illegal-dumping hotline was found beyond this program-specific line.

For anything else related to curbside service, USA Hauling and Recycling can be reached directly at 860-379-1662, or you can visit the Solid Waste Department at Torrington City Hall, 140 Main Street.
