Juneau Trash Pickup Schedule

Waterfront buildings below forested mountains in Juneau, Alaska

The Juneau trash pickup schedule is unusual twice over. The City and Borough does not collect garbage, and unlike most cities with private hauling, subscribing to a hauler is not even mandatory.

What the borough does run is a set of recycling and hazardous waste facilities under its RecycleWorks program. Understanding the split between those facilities and your private hauler is most of what you need here.

The borough does not collect garbage

The City and Borough of Juneau is explicit about this, and it is the single most important thing to know before calling anyone. CBJ states that it does not regulate or control garbage services.

Garbage collection, curbside co-mingled recycling and composting programs are all offered by private businesses. Calling the borough to start trash service, or to complain about a missed cart, sends you to an office with no authority over it.

Because CBJ does not regulate the service, it also does not set rates, routes or holiday calendars. Every one of those comes from your hauler's own terms.

Collection is optional here

Most cities on this site require every occupied home to have waste service, whether municipal or contracted. Juneau does not. Waste collection in Juneau and the borough is not mandatory.

Households that do not subscribe to a hauler are expected to haul their own waste to the landfill instead. That is a genuine, legal alternative rather than a loophole, and in a borough with Juneau's geography it is a practical choice for some households.

If you are weighing it up, the arithmetic is simple enough. Compare a hauler's monthly subscription against the fuel, time and landfill fees of self-hauling at whatever frequency your household actually generates waste.

How often is trash picked up in Juneau?

That depends entirely on the service you buy. There is no municipal minimum frequency because there is no municipal service.

Note the split in that table. The two rows the borough actually runs are both drop-off facilities, not curbside routes.

The plastics discrepancy

Here is a quirk that genuinely trips people up, because the right answer depends on where the plastic is going rather than what it is.

The Alaska Waste curbside program accepts plastics 1 through 7. The city's own recycling facility handles only numbers 1 and 2. The same yogurt tub can therefore be recyclable at your curb and not recyclable at the drop-off center a few miles away.

The practical rule: sort to whichever destination you actually use. If you use both, sort to the stricter standard for anything you plan to drop off, and let the curbside cart take the wider range.

Find your exact pickup day

Your collection day comes from your hauler. Alaska Waste provides curbside garbage and recycling in Juneau, and the borough directs curbside questions there directly.

See CBJ RecycleWorks on juneau.org →

Alaska Waste can confirm service and days on 907-780-7800. For questions about the borough's own facilities rather than curbside, RecycleWorks is on 907-364-7405.

Juneau Trash Holiday Schedule

Because collection is private and unregulated, there is no borough holiday collection calendar. Your hauler publishes its own, and that calendar is the only one that governs your service.

The borough's facilities do observe holidays, which is a separate matter from curbside. If you plan to drop off recycling or hazardous waste around a holiday, check the facility hours rather than assuming.

Household Hazardous Waste5600 Tonsgard CourtThu to Sat, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Junk Vehicle Disposal1725 Anka StreetTue to Sat, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Finding the recycling center catches out first-time visitors. After entering the landfill property, turn immediately right rather than continuing toward the landfill itself.

Junk vehicle disposal is handled by Skookum Recycling on 907-463-3001. Business drop-off of hazardous waste is by appointment only on 780-6691, where you leave a message rather than reaching someone directly.

Apartments & multifamily buildings

Because service is private throughout Juneau, apartment waste arrangements are made between the property and a hauler. There is no municipal standard a building has to meet.

Renters generally have nothing to arrange and no hauler to choose. Ask your property manager which company serves the building and whether recycling is part of the contract, since it may not be.
